Osteoarthritis (OA) affects 27 million Americans, and I am one of them. The number of people with this diagnosis will continue to rise as my generation ages, and concurrently, there will be an increase in hip and knee replacement surgical procedures. At the age of 60 years, I thought I was too young to be making the decision for joint replacement, but I was wrong. A fall skiing in January of 2011 ended my season with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL) disruption that led to a right ACL reconstruction. In the postoperative period, I developed severe left hip pain. The x-ray did not look too bad (in my opinion), the injection with local anesthetic combined with a corticosteroid that preceded the magnetic resonance arthro-gram completely resolved the pain for a few hours, and the magnetic resonance imaging was read as moderate to severe OA that would likely lead to a joint replacement in the near future. My reaction to the report was "you've mixed up the studies, that report must belong to someone else." The denial stage soon vanished.
