Lessons can be learned from studying recent outbreaks of rhabdomyolysis on college and high school athletic teams. I cover some of those lessons here. I also cover concerns about spleens that wax and wane in altruistic athletes who, as a prelude to donating stem cells for allogeneic transplant, receive filgrastim, or human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). And I conclude with highlights from a thought-provoking case study of a college basketball player that suggests the possibility that sickle cell trait (SCT) may contribute to postoperative compartment syndrome.
