Biochemical analysis and skin sensitivity test of the allergenic pollen of Datura metel L.

Quantitative estimation of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and free amino acids, in addition to the identification of free amino acids by paper chromatography and TLC, were carried out to determine the chemical composition of pollen collected from Datura metel plants in and around Santiniketan, India. The protein profile was studied by SDS-PAGE, while skin prick tests with the pollen antigen were conducted on 98 patients suffering from rhinitis or bronchial asthma, as well as on healthy volunteers.The pollen of D. metel showed high protein contents (22%) and high concentrations of proline, amino-n-butyric acid and arginine. SDS-PAGE of pollen protein showed 12 bands ranging between 18 and 127.2 kDa. In skin tests, 29% of patients showed a positive response to the antigen.
