摘要

The statement "exercise is good for you" is almost completely non-controversial. There is a vast preponderance of evidence, from epidemiologic, observational, and controlled trials demonstrating that people are generally much healthier when they exercise regularly. More specifically, there is a vastly reduced risk of having the so-called "diseases of civilization" (obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer). This powerful effect is understandable within the recently articulated context that humans are designed to be a very physically active species, and that sedentary living is as abnormal biologically as trying to live, for example, in Antarctica. Beyond the ability of regular physical activity to prevent disease, there is abundant, controlled evidence that patients with a variety of diseases not only return to normal life more quickly following participation in structured exercise training programs, but also have less evidence of progression in diseases that are usually thought of as being progressive.
