I have just returned from the fourth Information Seeking in Context Conference (held in Dublin) and was once again struck by the conservative approach to research adopted by many people in the LIS research field. As usual there were lots of small-scale qualitative studies, this time interspersed with theoretical models of information-seeking behaviour, and not much in between to build up a core of research knowledge. There was also the usual plethora of hypotheses to be viewed through the prism of the project being discussed. Most of these presentations distorted the idea of scientific advance, as proposed by Karl Popper, by turning into exercises in assembling evidence to support the hypothesis.
