This issue contains reviews of recent literature focusing on hepatobiliary physiology and pathophysiology, which had, in previous years, appeared in separate issues. Combining the former liver and biliary tract sections into one issue seems so logical that one may wonder why it was not done before now. However, one unfortunate consequence is that, due to space constraints, not all of the relevant material from the past year could be included. For example, the emergence of living-donor liver transplantation as a viable treatment option for selected patients with end-stage liver disease is not considered, and the interested reader is, instead, referred to several excellent reviews [1-4]. Ethical concerns about this procedure persist, particularly with the number of transplant centers performing the surgery and the inadequate data being collected on outcomes for both recipients and donors [5].
