摘要

Diseases of the liver and the biliary tract are an important but less-recognized cause of morbidity and mortality. Jay H. Lefkowitch (pp 185-193) once again begins this issue with a broad review of recent advances in hepato-biliary pathology. Emphasis should be given to the discussion of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), because it is generally recognized that NAFLD is one of the most common causes of liver disease in the United States and its prevalence is expected to increase as the rate of obesity in this country increases. The term, NAFLD, refers to a broad spectrum of liver injury, ranging from steatosis alone to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis and its associated complications, including he-patocellular carcinoma. Within this spectrum, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) assumes importance, given that it can lead to progressive liver disease.
