In this work, electrospun twisted polyimide (PI) nanofiber ropes with high conductivity, improved tensile strength, thermal stability and good flexibility have been successfully prepared by simply adsorbing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of the PI nanofibers. Compared with the pure twisted PI rope (similar to 93.5 MPa), the twisted CNTs/PI ropes have an enhanced mechanical strength (116.2 MPa, stretched up to 16.7%). The as-prepared twisted CNTs/PI fibers can keep a stable morphology even at 400 degrees C. Furthermore, the CNTs/PI fibers exhibit outstanding electrical properties, and the temperature-dependent electrical conductivity follows variable-range-hopping (VRH) conduction law. The highest room-temperature conductivity of the rope is 0.324 S cm(-1), and the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curves are linear even at 50K. Particularly, the resistance of the rope only has a slight change when being bonded from 0 degrees to 360 degrees, indicating that the composite rope has high stability and can have good performance in flexible environmental application. In addition, the functional twisted CNTs/PI rope has similar characteristics to ordinary thread which makes it applicable as invisible flexible wire in future intelligent clothing.
