NIAB's Seeds Day was cancelled due to FMD -- but variety enthusiasts can still get their annual fix here. Boost your hard feed wheat acreage this autumn, suggests NIAB's Richard Fenwick. "People have deserted these varieties in favour of soft biscuitand breadmaking wheats. Now feed wheats are under 20 percent, which is the lowest they've been for a long time. There's a huge feed market out there, so it's time for a U-turn. And there are some excellent new high yielding hard feeds available." Currently a huge proportion -- about 65 percent -- of the wheat area is drilled with soft biscuit and top milling wheats, largely due to the growing popularity of disease resistant soft wheat Claire and milling favourite Malacca. This is out of kilter with demand, which is split as 40 percent feed, 21 percent export, and 35 percent bread and biscuit combined.
