The Howard Rotavator started it all -- a versatile cultivator with bladed horizontal rotor for primary and secondary pillage. Its name still commands a role as the generic term for this type of implement -- now many more makes and designs have developed that original theme. Not that the rotary tiller is as popular as it once was. With relatively high running costs related mainly to blade or tine replacement and fuel consumption, farmers and contractors are more inclined to use tines or discs for stubble tilling, tines or a power harrow for seed bed preparation. This type of implement does have some enthusiastic followers among cereal growers, however, who point to the one-pass possibilities on medium to heavy soils. Forward speed may be slow but that is not necessarily a drawback when everything can be completed from stubble to sown crop in one go.
