Early drilling and blackgrass is a dangerous mix. David Millar seeks advice from the experts. Crop management isn't just about devising a new strategy that involves drilling a week earlier than last year come what may. On a farm with a known blackgrass problem, it could be tantamount to asking for trouble. For, as Suffolk-based John Clarke, of Independent Agronomy, says: "There is no magic formula for dealing with blackgrass when you drill early. Instead it's a case of familiar techniques attractingmore risk. Avoid early drilling if blackgrass is really a big problem: "The advantage of drilling wheat early can be lost because of the difficulties in obtaining good control of blackgrass in the warm, dry conditions normally prevalent early September.
