"I'm one of those farmers who has always preferred to farm one acre as an owner occupier more than 100 acres as a tenant. Over the past decade, as land values have surged rather more convincingly than my ability to pay high rents, that conviction hasonly strengthened. But I still farm a considerable tenanted acreage, and this land is hired under an assortment of tenancies. The trouble is, of course, that, regardless of whether the agreements are FBTs or secure tenancies under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987, landlords and their agents are generally expecting me to agree hefty increases in rent.
