摘要

A pilot project to reduce the impact of pesticides on drinking water supplies is bearing fruit. But there's more for growers to do. "Must do better" just about sums up the first year of a project urging farmers to adjust pesticide usage to avoid leaching risks to drinking water in six key catchment areas. To be fair, no-one expected a rapid tumaround in the levels of pesticide contamination in the three main lowland arable catchments: the Leam in Warwickshire, the Blithe in Staffordshire and the Cherwell on the Northamptonshire/Oxfordshire borders. However, last winter's monitoring did show some welcome reductions in pesticide contamination in the catchments of the Rivers Blithe and Leam, although not in the Cherwell area.
