Resisting the temptation to drill early may be difficult, but it's an effective way of managing blackgrass popultions. Drilling earlier and earlier, more and more winter cereals, at lower and lower seed rates, using min-till techniques has been the economic necessity and reality for many growers. Unfortunately, following the crowd is counter-productive when it comes to black grass control. Morley Agricultural Consultant Andrew Blazey suggests bucking the trend completely to beat blackgrass. "Drill later. It's not trendy to say so, but it can be done, although it takes a lot of self control when all your neighbours are out there drilling."
