I had to admire the sheer courage of plant science company BASF in seeking permission for field trials of GM potatoes in the UK next year. As I munched on my GM-free eggs, toast and bacon, it occurred to me that they must be bonkers to request such athing. As Maggie pointed out, with organic farming in the ascendant and with most of the supermarkets tamely sticking to a "non-GM" policy, who is going to buy a GM potato anyway?
