A new attempt to grow soya in UK conditions is being made this year. Philip Case visits a grower trying out a new variety. With increasing demand for soya, both in Britain and across the world, a UK company is seeking more people to sign up and grow the crop. avid McNaughton, managing director of Soya UK, highlights that one reason behind the new attempt was the doubling in the past five years of the price of soya to 340 pound making it a profitable break crop for the British grower. ver the past 18months, new seed varieties have come on to the market designed more for growing in UK conditions. The new varieties, such as Elena bred in the Ulaaine, are "light years ahead" of those available 10 years ago and they offer early harvests, excellent yields and quality, Mr McNaughton says.
