Entry Level Stewardship faces a stern test this year, with almost a third of agreements up for renewal. Robert Harris gauges progress. Nine out of 10 farmers whose Entry Level Stewardship agreements end over the next few months will have to renew if key environmental targets are to be met. Natural England, the government's adviser on the environment and the body behind ELS, reckons that sort of rate - plus expected new recruits - will lift the amount of usable agricultural area (UAA) in England undersome sort of environmental scheme to 70% by next spring, compared with 68% now. And, perhaps more importantly, 90% renewal is critical to ensure that the Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE), which relies heavily on ELS participation, remains on track.
