Great lessons sometimes come from the most unlikely places. People and events have slipped up on me without warning and changed my way of thinking about many things, including advertising and marketing. One fall a local radio station that I dealt withsponsored a marketing seminar for their local customers. I figured that there would be little for me, a national advertiser, to learn from a program designed to help independent auto parts dealers, hardware store owners and the like do a better job of advertising. But I wasn't busy, my friend at the station invited me and there was going to be afree lunch. So I went.
