The cost control management of hazardous waste is a subject that is both timely, relevant, and of interest to the general public, government and general industry across the globe. It is important to understand that controlling cost for environmental remediation of hazardous materials is a complex and challenging operation that requires diligence and the development and execution of an effective project control system [12]. This paper will address the following practices for controlling hazardous waste remediation cost: 1) Establishment of a trend-based information database from which objective evaluations may be made. 2) Estimating techniques and methodology for finding and controlling hidden cost. 3) Contingency estimating. 4) Cost drivers, impacts and solutions. 5) Performance measurement that provides an impartial assessment of productivity and efficiency. 6) Knowledge based analysis that provides corrective action for improved performance in applicable areas warranted by the analysis and surveillance practices methodology. And, 7) Innovative claims and dispute avoidance.
