US agriculture firm Monsanto announced on Friday it intends to spend $1.6m to help develop a system that will verify and measure reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions at farms. Monsanto and others will develop a framework that draws on existing greenhouse gas modelling, emerging verification technologies and precision business planning methods to encourage the adoption of conservation practices and validate that farmers are helping to reduce greenhouse gases.
