Innovative therapeutic concepts such as regenerative therapies require polymeric biomaferials with multiple functions. The complex requirements presented by these therapies cannot be fulfilled completely by the few polymers established in clinical applications so far. One of the major challenges for the polymeric materials community is to design multifunctional materials with functions such as degradability [1-3], controlled drug release capability [4], or stimuli-sensitivity [5], while addressing how to overcome immunological barriers [6], inflammation [7], or endotoxin contamination [8]. In order to bridge the gap between medical grade material availability and material demand, there needs to be clear communication between the scientists who design and produce polymeric materials and those that implement them in the bio-medical application and finally in the clinic.
