We read with a great interest the letter by Dr. Y. Denizot and N. Nathan commenting on our recently published paper (Ref. [1]), suggesting the soluble Flt-1 is capable of sequestering ligand and preventing signal transduction. As pointed by Dr. Y. Denizot and N. Nathan, sFlt-1 is released during CPB; plasma sFlt-1 is related to the occurrence of post-operative complications [2], Studies have reported that Flt-1 expression and signaling decreased with age [3,4]. It is thus tempting to speculate that CPB-induced sFlt-1 release might be different in infants and young children compared to older individuals. Investigation of plasma sFlt-1 levels during CPB in infants and young children might be of interest to test this hypothesis.
