To the Editor: TNFalpha and IL-1 play an important key role at the onset of osteoarthritis (OA) [1]. These pro inflammatory cytokines have a catabolic action and cause multiple articular effects on chondro-cytes, including the stimulation of matrix degradation proteinases and synthesis suppression of cartilage matrix [2-4]. The IL-1 family includes IL-1alpha and IL-1beta, according to that; it was proposed that IL-1alpha shows early degenerative changes, while IL-1beta appears in advanced OA [5].
