The complexation behavior of cyclodextrins (CDs) with a dumbbell molecule possessing ferrocene (Fe) moieties at both the ends (FcC10Fc) was investigated by H-1 NMR, two-dimensional rotating frame Overhauser spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. alpha-CD includes the cyclopentadienyl rings of the Fe moiety shallowly from the wider side but not the decamethylene (C10) moiety, whereas beta-CD and gamma-CD include not only the Fe moiety but also the C10 moiety. These observations indicate that the Fe moiety can pass through beta-CD and gamma-CD cavities but not the alpha-CD cavity.
