The paper presents the results of an experi-mental study on the effects of the initial water content anddry density on the soil-water retention curve and theshrinkage behavior of a compacted Lias-clay. The initialconditions after compaction (initial water content and ini-tial dry density) have been chosen on the basis of threeProctor tests of different compaction efforts. According tothe eight chosen initial conditions clay samples have beencompacted statically. The relation between total suctionand water content was determined for the drying pathstarting from the initial conditions without previous satu-ration of the specimens. A chilled-mirror dew-pointhygrometer was used for the suction measurements. For theinvestigation of the shrinkage behavior cylindrical speci-mens were dried to desired water contents step-by-stepwithout previous saturation. The volume of the specimenswas measured by means of a caliper. Based on the testresults the influence of different initial conditions onthe soil suction and the shrinkage behavior is analyzed. Thesoil-water retention curves obtained in terms of thegravimetric water content are independent of the initial drydensity. At water contents above approximately 11-12.5%a strong influence of the compaction water content isobserved. At smaller water contents, the soil-water reten-tion curve is independent of the compaction water content.The results of the shrinkage tests show that the influence ofthe compaction dry density on the shrinkage behavior isnegligible. Similar to the drying behavior of saturatedsamples a primary and a residual drying process could bedistinguished. The primary drying process is stronglyinfluenced by the initial water content. In contrast, the rateof the volume change of the residual drying process isunaffected by the initial water content.
