摘要

PET scanning stands for positron-emission tomography scanning and is a valuable method for the three-dimensional imaging of molecules within the body; it allows the direct observation of the movements of drugs, pharmaceuticals and metabolites. For example, it can monitor in real time how and when a pharmaceutical arrives at particular organs, and whether it arrives at the intended target at all. The catch is that it is necessary to incorporate positron-emitting radioactive atoms (radioisotopes) in the molecules of interest, and this is hampered by the extremely short half-lives (the time it takes for half of them to decay and disappear) of suitable atoms such as ~(11)C and ~(18)F (half-lives 20 and 110 minutes, respectively). The positrons emitted by these nuclei are high-energy particles, which, as soon as they meet an electron, annihilate with the production of gamma rays, and it is these that are detected by the PET scanner.
