Lanthanoid complexes bearing the bulky pentaphenylcyclopentadienyl (C5Ph5) ligand are difficult to synthesise due to reactivity and purification problems. However, redox-transmetallation/ protolysis (RTP) reactions carried out in tetrahydrofuran (thf) between ytterbium metaL, HgPh2 and C5Ph5H afforded the solvent-separated ion pair [Yb(thf)6][C5Ph5]2, which can be desolvated to yield [Yb(C5Ph5)2]. Although the latter complex is structurally intriguing, its poor solubility hinders reactivity studies.
