The Harber-Bosch process generates c. 500 million tonnes of ammonia-based fertilisers from H2 and H2 per annum. It relies on iron-based catalysts, and consumes a staggering 1-2% of the annual global energy supply. Finding low-energy replacements for this process remains a holy grail for chemists.
