摘要

The seismicity of the western and southwestern territory of Romania, called inthis paper Banat Seismic Region (BSR) is analyzed for the historical period usinga new regional Parameter Earthquakes Catalogue (Oros et al. 2007). The cataloguecomprises a number of 709 earthquakes occurred between 1443 and 1970, the 269 ofwhich being new recorded events. The magnitudes/intensities (epicentral or maxi-mum observed) range between 2.2 and 5.7 (Mm, Ms, mb, MLH or Mw) and 3.0-8EMS, respectively. Some of the major events re-evaluated on instrumental basis (his-torical seismograms collected by the author as partner into the EuroSeismos project)show larger values of magnitudes than the previous ones. The space distribution ofthe epicenters displays an obvious clustering trend well correlated with the tectonicsand geology (faults and fault systems, structures). The time distribution displaysan apparent migration of the seismic activity between different sources zones, e.g.before 1900 the activity concentrates within the northwestern and southeastern areasof BSR and after 1900 the activity groups mainly in the central part of the region.
