Current brix yields tend to be about 5 t/ha in processing tomato crops. It is postulated that using existing knowledge, brix yields as high as 10 t/ha could be achieved. This will involve the integration and fine tuning of a diverse range of scientific and agronomic skills including: (1) Modifying plant spacing and increasing bed width; (2) Improved crop nutrition; (3) Breeding cultivars with a high harvest index; (4) Harvesting the fruit at the optimum date; (5) Improvements in irrigation scheduling, particularly close to harvest. These factors are considered independently and then in an integrative manner..
