Since the emergence of the Australian non-astringent persimmon industry in 1980, it has increased to 170 000 trees and is valued at $A 3-5 million. Production extends from the north of Queensland down the eastern and southern seaboards to Western Australia. The most important cultivar is Fuyu, with Izu and Suruga having potential to extend the season in the subtropics. Marketable yields of 10-15 t/ha are achievable. Most of the fruit is for domestic consumption but exports, mainly to Singapore, areincreasing. The industry is of similar size to that of New Zealand but the latter country has developed a much more successful export industry.
