Measurements of crop transpiration have been carried out by the Applied Plant Research (APR) station in Naaldwijk, The Netherlands, for many years with increasingly better weighing equipment. Ultimately a weighing gutter system has been developed that operates well under practical conditions and is a useful tool in crop management. The APR-Naaldwijk weighable gutter system monitors the water management of greenhouse crops (e.g. tomatoes) and offers information for checking and automatically regulating the water supply. The collected data offer additional information on climate control and fresh weight growth of the crop. The cumulative daily pattern of the water management provides information on the water supply and uptake, drainage, crop weight and crop transpiration. The information includes the time of water supply and the amount of water that is given per irrigation cycle. The software corrects the crop transpiration and fresh weight growth during water supply. The pattern of the gutter weight gives information about the water content of the substrate. Crop growth during the night was higher when there was more radiation during the previous day period.
