The effect of postharvest-regulated deficit irrigation of cross-trained peach tree cv. Springcrest/GF677 on growth and yield was investigated in Italy during 1999-2001. Irrigation requirements were reduced by applying regulated deficit irrigation at phenological stages when the plants were less sensitive to water deficit. From bud break to harvest, irrigation was managed by applying water supply equal to 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc); while from harvest to early autumn, water supply was equivalent to 100, 50 and 25% ETc. Water supply at 50% ETc did not cause reduction in yield or quality, and 1000, 1800 and 2400 m3/ha of water was saved under this treatment during 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively. The irrigation volume at the postharvest stages ranged from 66 to 78% of the seasonal irrigation volume. The pre-dawn leaf water potential under 50 and 25% ETc reached maximum values of -0.5 and -0.75 MPa, respectively while this was in the range -0.2--0.3 MPa in the control.
