The chilling and postdormant heat requirement of quince (Cydonia oblonga), XPyronia veitchii cv. Luxembergiana Guillaumin and pears (Pyrus communis, P. elaeagrifolia, P. longipes, P. betulifolia) and Pyronia hybrid X P. communis for bud break were examined by means of placing shoot cuttings in the glasshouse for 16℃ at monthly intervals during the winter. The results indicated that the chilling requirement of quince was shorter than that of pears. Both chilling and heat requirement were related tothe source of the material, and were probably polygenic characters. In mature quince trees, significant correlations were found between chilling and heat requirement; chilling requirement and bud break date; heat requirement and bud break date; and budbreak date and flowering date.
