In France, sweet cherry [Prunus avium] cultivars are selected for good adaptation to specific geographical areas and superior agronomic traits. It is also important to retain potential parents with useful agronomic characters and to provide data onthe inheritance of different traits. Stage A of an evaluation strategy consists of a simultaneous study of varietal collections at 3 representative environments. Collections are first checked for viral diseases. Stage B consists of local field trials ofvarieties selected from Stage A. When trials are completed, promising varieties are added to the recommended list and contacts are established with breeders to determine how these varieties may be multiplied and distributed. Varieties which are not selected but possess interesting characteristics are preserved in a gene bank.
