Citrus biotechnology research has been conducted since the early 1970's in China. Its development and progress since then is reviewed under the headings; anther culture and pollen-derived plants; embryo culture; endosperm culture for seedless triploid citrus; shoot-tip grafting and virus-free citrus programme; protoplast isolation, culture and plant regeneration; protoplast fusion and somatic hybridization; initiation of molecular biology and genetic transformation; the occurrence, utilization andavoidance of chromosome variation; control of embryogenesis of citrus; and induced mutations and mutant selection in vitro.
