A method of testing for resistance to Cytospora spp. (Valsa canker) in sweet cherries was adapted for use in the breeding work at Pillnitz. The first Cytospora tests of Pillnitz sweet cherry germplasm identified the following resistant cultivars: Burlat, Hudson, Merton Heart, Span'sche Knorpel and the Pillnitz selections Nanni, Nalina and Nadino. Van, Hedelfinger, Kassins and Lambert were confirmed to be very susceptible. A new technique of testing for Pseudomonas resistance was developed in association with the Institute of Phytopathology at Aschersleben. Cultivars tested for Pseudomonas syringae were susceptible to varying degrees. Resistance and susceptibility to Cytospora did not appear to be related to that for Pseudomonas. The two charactersseemed to be independently inherited. It is concluded that enough variation in resistance to Cytospora exists to provide a foundation on which to base a successful breeding programme.
