Genetic engineering of asparagus: assessment of methods, field testing and safety considerations

The development of asparagus transformation systems, based on microprojectile bombardment and direct DNA uptake into protoplasts, is discussed. During 1989-92, the field performance of a transgenic asparagus line was evaluated. It had low vigour andpoor yield compared to the parental genotype (CRD157). The inferior performance was attributed to genetic events during tissue culture, rather than to the insertion or expression of foreign genes. The nutritional contents of harvested transgenic and parental spears were similar. This line, AFT1, is transgenic for a selectable marker gene conferring kanamycin resistance to plant cells. Information on the integration of genetic engineering technology into breeding programmes and on safety evaluation of transgenic crops is included.
