In trials in Poland, Schattenmorelle cherry was budded on F 12/1 rootstocks in the nursery at heights of 10-15 or 25-30 cm. As a result of fluctuating temperatures late in the following winter, many trees were injured, particularly the high-budded trees. High budding resulted in more vigorous growth of Schattenmorelle scions in the nursery and orchard. Yields from high-budded trees were also slightly higher, but the increase in yields was probably a function of increased tree size. High budding onF 12/1 is not recommended for sour cherry since it creates a greater risk of winter damage to the rootstock and produces excessively vigorous trees. Deep planting forced removal of lower lateral shoots at planting and this resulted in reductions of growth and yield. Therefore, deep planting is not recommended as a means of preventing winter damage to high-budded rootstocks.
