Some growth and physiological responses of iron-efficient and inefficient species of Malus to iron deficiency

摘要

Young seedlings of M. xiaojinensis, M. baccata and M. micromalus were grown in culture solutions adjusted to pH 7.8. There were no significant differences in stem and root growth and in mineral element content between plants grown with adequate or inadequate levels of Fe. When Fe supply was adequate, photosynthetic rate of young leaves and their chlorophyll content were highest in M. xiaojinensis and lowest in M. baccata. When Fe was deficient, both the photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content of all species decreased during the experimental period of 42 days. Under Fe deficiency root ATP content increased in M. xiaojinensis and M. micromalus but decreased in M. baccata. It is suggested that root ATP content and P:Fe ratio appear to be reliablecriteria in screening for Fe-efficient genotypes in Malus.
