Comparison of international asparagus cultivars under Rhine-Valley conditions in Germany

Twelve asparagus cultivars from Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, USA and Taiwan were planted in 1988 at Ingelheim. In autumn 1989, plant losses of 10-15% were already observed in the cultivars Tainan, Del Monte 361 and UC 157. Depending on cultivar, total yield in 1990 ranged from 0.47 to 4.2 t/ha. Yields of 0.82 t/ha for Del Monte 361 and 0.47 t/ha for UC 157 were very poor. In 1991, plant losses increased to 66% for UC 157 and 37% for Del Monte 361. A maximum loss of 5% for the German cultivars and no loss of plants of Dutch cultivars were observed. In 1992, total yields were between 0.18 and 6.16 t/ha, with only Dutch and German cultivars showing yields at the higher end of the range. Single plant yields of surviving plants from southern and non-European cultivars were also very low. Under Rhine Valley conditions, the highest single plant yield in 1992 (462 g) was attained by the Dutch cultivar Gijnlim, while the American cultivar UC 157 had the lowest plant yield (45 g). Due to high plant losses, it did not appear relevant to continue the trial beyond 1992. Obviously the performance of a given cultivar can be best realized in areas offering similar conditions to those of the breeder. Therefore, German growers are recommended to use the Dutch and German cultivars of those tested.
