Influence of dwarfing cherry rootstocks on fruit production

Cherry rootstocks Mazzard F12/1, Maxma Delbard 14, and Tabel Edabriz, were studied with Burlat and Van scions at 2 locations in SE France (Valence and Nimes) for 10 years. The tree size and cropping characteristics were measured on Burlat. Yield components on 1- to 5-year-old wood (number of spurs, flowers and fruit per metre, fruit set and average fruit weight) were studied. Tabel Edabriz is a dwarfing rootstock (canopy volume ranging from 20 to 40% of that of F12/1) which comes into production early (3-4 years) and has a very high yield index. The fruit yield is very high on 2-year-old spurs. Maxma Delbard 14 is a semi-dwarfing rootstock which bears fruit earlier than Mazzard F12-1 (4-5 years), and has a high yield index. Data analysis showed that when the yield index of such rootstocks was too high, the fruit size and annual shoot growth markedly decreased. In order to maintain good fruit size, it is important to get sufficient shoot growth and pruning techniques should be accordingly adapted.
