In a trial in 1992, Aggrofoam (recycled polyurethane ether (PUR) foam) mats first used in 1984, 1986 or 1988 and steam treated 6, 6 and 4 times, respectively, were compared with new PUR Hortifibre (loose fir (Pinus sylvestris) fibre) or Unalit (poplar fibreboard) mats as substrates for tomatoes and cucumbers. There was n.s.d. in earliness or total production of tomatoes grown on old, steam-treated PUR mats or on any type of new mat. Both the PUR substrate, which can be reused for 10-15 years, and the compostable 1-year wood fibre substrates meet the present economic, ecological and ergonomic standards of modern glasshouse horticulture. Details of the chemical and physical properties of the media are given.
