Effect of growing media on the production and quality of two rose varieties.

Yield and flower quality were evaluated in two rose cultivars ('Bianca' and 'First Red') grown on three substrates (cocopeat, perlite + cocopeat at 3:1 and perlite + zeolite at 3:1) in an open soilless culture system. Differences in yield and flowerquality were observed between cultivars and substrates. 'Bianca' had higher yield when grown on perlite + cocopeat and perlite + zeolite mixtures, while 'First Red' had higher flower quality when grown on cocopeat or cocopeat + perlite mixture. No significant differences were found among plants grown on different substrates for the physiological parameters measured, i.e. net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration.
