Characterization of banana and plantain using random amplified polymorphic DNA markers.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPD) were used to assess genetic diversity among 37 banana and plantain cultivars. Arbitrary deca-nucleotide primers were successfully used to amplify the DNA obtained from the nursery. Results were visually analysed and the unweighted pair-group method arithmetic average (UPGMA) cluster analysis performed. The accessions clustered into groups based upon their genome composition. Polymorphisms for almost all of the cultivars were obtained for each of the primers used. It was also possible to distinguish between accessions from the genotypes AAB and ABB with primer OPAA-13. The use of RAPD-polymerase chain reaction could thus provide a simple alternative method to document the identity of several Musa cultivars.
