A study was carried out to determine the persistence during winter of pear decline, associated with phytoplasmas, in phloem tissues of several quince rootstock selections grafted with different pear cultivars. The naturally infected trees showed characteristic pear decline foliage symptoms for the first time the previous summer. PCR revealed phytoplasmas in the roots of all 18 quince CTS 212 rootstocks of pear-decline affected Williams [Williams' Bon Chretien] trees examined, but only in 6 out of the 16 quince C rootstocks of Comice trees, in 4 out of 22 quince BA 29 rootstocks of Abate Fetel trees and in 2 out of 26 quince A rootstocks of Conference or Williams trees. It is concluded that there is a considerable variation in the suitability of quince selections for overwintering of the pear decline agent.
