Surveys during 1992-93 in France revealed 73 peach and apricot orchards infected by plum pox potyvirus (PPV). PPV isolate No 116 from an apricot orchard and belonging to group D and isolate No 14 from a peach orchard and belonging to group M were used for inoculations in insect-proof greenhouses. The results showed uneven distribution of the PPV-14 (M type) and PPV-116 (D type) in orchards. The difference in infectivity between the isolates was confirmed by aphid inoculation of young trees and ELISA. Differences were also observed between peach and apricot in the patterns of PPV distribution within the whole tree.
