Pear production is one of the most important activities in the irrigated valleys of Northern Patagonia, Argentina. Different plant growth regulators (PGRs) are being used to improve and maintain fruit quality during the growing season and in postharvest. The use of 6-Benzyladenine (6-BA), a synthetic cytokinin, as a chemical thinner has been increasing during the past three years with rewarding outcomes. Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), inhibitors of ethylene synthesisand ethylene perception, respectively, are sprayed previous to harvest to reduce fruit drop and slow down the ripening process of Bartlett pears and other cultivars. AVG (ReTain) and 1-MCP (Harvista) extend the harvest window with no loss in fruit quality, but with an increase in fruit size. Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), a synthetic auxin, is also sprayed on pear trees to reduce fruit drop during the harvest window, although the ripening process is not delayed. 1-MCP is widely used as a postharvest treatment (Smart Fresh) on Bartlett pears, extending the postharvest life of the fruit in cold storage and during shelf life. The use of these PGRs and the data from trials and commercial applications will be presented.
