Evaluation of Musa spp for susceptibility to nematodes and study of resistance mechanisms.

Radopholus similis is a major cause of yield decline of banana and plantains worldwide. Musa germplasm was evaluated to find sources of resistance to this nematode. Investigations were also conducted to identify the mechanisms of resistance in resistant accessions. Both triploids and diploids were evaluated in pots on sterile substrate. The accessions were compared to the resistant banana Yangambi Km5 (Ibota, AAA) and the susceptible plantain French Sombre (AAB). Two months after inoculation with 1000 R. similis per plant, the plants were harvested and their root systems were observed for nematode populations. Results indicated that most of the diploids were susceptible to R. similis. The diploid banana M. acuminata banksii (AA) were comparable tothe susceptible standard in their level of susceptibility to R. similis. Most of the accessions from M. balbisiana (BB) and some diploid bananas (AA) were comparable to the resistant standard Yangambi Km5. Plantains and East African bananas (Lugijura, AAA) were very susceptible. Cavendish bananas (AAA) were slightly less susceptible than East African bananas and plantains. Other Ibota bananas were resistant. Study of the mechanisms of resistance revealed no difference in the penetration rate of R. similis between Yangambi Km5 and French Sombre, however, the multiplication rate was significantly lower on Yangambi Km5. Histochemical studies indicated that phenols may play a role in the resistance of Musa to R. similis.
