Disinfection of recirculation water from closed cultivation systems by heat treatment.

Experiments were conducted to compare the efficiency of different temperature regimes in the disinfection of the recirculation water in closed cultivations systems. Several exposure times and temperatures were tested against tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici in a commercial heating installation and against Radopholus similis in a laboratory set-up. ToMV was completely eliminated with exposure to 95鳦 for at least 15 seconds. Similarly, 100% efficacy was obtained with exposure to 87鳦 for 15 seconds. For ToMV, a correlation was established between the lethal temperature and exposure time; the lower the temperature, the longer the exposure time required for the elimination of the virus. This correlation was not observed in tests with F. oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici; at the shortest exposure time of 45 seconds, 100% efficacy was achieved at all temperatures tested (80-95鳦). In the laboratory set-up, adults and juveniles of R. similis were killed at 48, 50 and 52.5鳦during 5 and 2 minutes and 30 seconds, respectively. The motility of the nematodes can be used as a parameter of the efficacy of the treatment, but should be established after one or two weeks, as some nematodes were only non-motile (but not dead), following heat treatment, and were able to infect Anthurium plants (in in vivo tests) for a given period of time.
